Position Summary:

Prepares patients to see the physicians, facilitates lab test and other physician orders as needed and assists the Nurse Supervisor with oversight of clinical oversight of Medical Assistants and other clinical duties and procedures as directed. Performs a variety of technical procedures in the area of the laboratory under the direct supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Reports all results from in-house lab equipment as well as samples sent to reference lab under the direct supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Performs venipuncture, specimen collection, specimen processing and simple technical procedures under the direct supervision of the Nurse Supervisor. Keeps work are clean and maintains adequate supply levels.

Essential Functions:

  • Greets patient and escorts them from the waiting room to laboratory draw station.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for the patients/families in accordance with office standards.
  • Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
  • Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA and COLA guidelines.
  • Obtains and handles laboratory specimens according to COLA and CLIA guidelines.
  • Replenishes supplies stocks and cleans lab area.
  • Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortages to Clinical Director.
  • Performs blood drawing (phlebotomy) as required for various laboratory tests ordered by the physician.
  • Escorts patient back to exam room following blood drawing, if applicable.
  • Directs lab results to physician for review.
  • Completes all phlebotomist orders and/or tasks as entered in the EMR by clinical staff.
  • Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors and other clinical personnel.
  • Attends phlebotomy, CPR, OSHA and COLA training programs as scheduled.
  • Attends all regular staff meetings.
  • Performs all other tasks and projects assigned by the Clinical Director, Practice Administrator or the physicians.
  • Practices a high level of integrity and honestly in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Greets patients and escorts them from the waiting room to exam room; prepares patients for exam or treatment.
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments prior to patient appointment.
  • Assists physicians in preparing for examinations and minor procedures.
  • Performs basic nursing procedures including thermal applications, non-sterile soaks and applications of simple dressing, perineal care and urine tests.
  • Obtains and documents patient vital signs in EMR, including temperature, blood pressure, height, weight, respiration and pulse.
  • Obtains and documents patient's favorite pharmacy, smoking history, allergies, current medication list and/or reconciles the current medication.
  • Prior to patient appointment assures all reports and other medical information are current in EMR.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for the patient and their families.
  • Pre-certifies surgical and other procedures, if appropriate.
  • Receives verbal and written orders and enters them into EMR at the time order is received.
  • Answers M.A. phones, takes messages, enter messages in EMR; returns patient phones call same day.
  • Schedules tests and off site procedures when necessary.
  • Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
  • Performs patient education when appropriate.
  • Replenishes supplies stocks and cleans exam rooms daily.
  • Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortage to Clinical Director.
  • Maintains company code of conduct and patient confidentiality as regulated by HIPPA.
  • Performs other task and projects assigned by Clinical Director, Director of Practice Management, Office Manager or physicians.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education:


High school diploma

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in phlebotomy.
  • At least one year of experience in primary care clinical assisting.
  • Experience performing lab tests and processing lab and diagnostic study orders.

Req. Certification/Licensure:

  • Current/valid Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

Preferred Experience:

  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience preferred.

Working / Environmental Conditions:

  • Employee will have frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions to a clinic environment. Employee will adhere to all OSHA, COLA and CLIA guidelines in order to prevent and/or minimize said exposure.

Physical Demands:

  • Position requires full range body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking. Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required. Employee may work under stressful conditions and may work irregular hours.
